Methodology

Panel selection. 1,000 repositories are selected each quarter from GitHub's top projects — 600 by stars and 600 by recent activity, deduplicated and capped at 1,000. The panel is fixed for the entire quarter to ensure trend comparability.

Daily scanning. Every day at 3:00 UTC, each repository in the panel is cloned and analyzed. Commit messages are parsed for AI tool signatures —Co-Authored-By trailers, known email patterns, and message prefixes.

Detected tools. Claude Code, Cursor, Aider, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini CLI. These tools leave identifiable signatures in commit metadata.

Limitations. Tools that don't sign commits (Windsurf, Copilot inline autocomplete, Kilo Code) are invisible to this method. The real AI adoption rate is likely higher than what we measure. This index tracks a lower bound.
